Father's Day
My dad, Homer L. Norville, picture here at this last birthday party. He turned 94. He passed last December. I think about him everyday. I miss him. Not the same Father’s Day without him.
Being a father is more than conceiving children- it is taking care of them and leading the type of life that young people can emulate. There are many people that can be counted among father figures; step-fathers, older brothers, mentors, coaches and the like. If you happen to be in one of those positions or some other that I haven’t thought of - know that kids are seeking people to “look up to” and you can make a difference in their lives.
In the African-American community only 24% of children are born with a mother and father in their homes. We can do better. The young people in this country deserve more. Thank you to all the fathers today for the special role you have in your children’s lives and the children in your sphere of influence. Happy Father’s Day!
